Medical laser hair removal: The first in the Benelux

The permanent removal of unwanted hair is the desire of many. Shaving and waxing offer only a temporary solution, because they do not destroy the hair roots. Moreover, they have unpleasant side effects such as irritation, ingrown hairs and regrowth in the most unwanted moments. With the advent of hair removal lasers in the late 1990-ies the dream of ‘permanent hairfree’ started to become reality. Unfortunately, laser systems up to now had a relatively short wavelength, so that they still could not penetrate to the level of the hair root. Only the hairs were destroyed, but the roots remained intact, resulting in new hair growth after some time instead of the expected permanent hair removal.

Following problems still remained unattended:

  • Deeper hair roots mainly to the back of men are still beyond the reach of shorter laser beams.
  • Dark skin types and tanned skins are sensitive to shorter wavelengths and burn easily with the those laser beams.
  • Large areas need a laserhead with a big surface. Current hair removal lasers have too small heads resulting in a long time consuming treatment.
  • Ultra-fine hairs need a very short pulse time and escape the treament with traditional hair removal lasers.
  • The pain sensation can be further reduced by better cooling.

When is Laser Hair Removal Really Permanent?

Laser hair removal is only really effective if the beam penetrates DEEP into the hair follicle (read the roots) with sufficient energy to destroy it.

The evolution of laser hair removal

The ruby laser was the first hair removal laser with a wavelength of 694 nm, quickly followed by the Flash Lights (IPL) with wavelengths of 600 nm to 650 nm and the Alexandrietlaser with a wavelength of 755 nm. After the millennium the Diode Lasers entered the market with a wavelength of 810 nm and a cooled laser head. This slightly longer wavelength was soon accepted as the “Golden standard” in laser hair removal. Unfortunately, all these systems are mainly suitable for candidates with dark hair of an average depth and a light skin color. Too deep hairs, such as on the backs of men or on the bikini of women, and dark skin types are often out of reach for those wavelengths as they are too short to penetrate into the deepest hair root.

With the advent of the Medical Nd Yag laser 1064 nm, the longest wavelength in the hair removal lasers, this important group can also enjoy a permanent hair removal. Carefree hair-free is now within everyone’s reach.

How do I prepare for this treatment?

  • Shave your hair one day in advance – preferably with a razor blade – but leave a small strip of unshaven skin on, to assess your hair type.
  • Sun tanning before hair removal is not an obstacle anymore, but the lighter your skin the more powerful the energy.
  • No waxing, plucking or tweezing (eg with Epilady) prior to the treatment. The hair should remain in the root on the time of treatment.
  • Respect the right timing recommended to you for the follow-up treatments. It maximizes your chances to have new hairs in the growth fase at the time of your next treatment. Only hairs in the growth fase are deep enough into the root.

Which results can I expect?

  • Approximately 10 days after treatment, the hairs fall out. This phenomenon is common, but is not necessary to obtain the result.
  • On average the treatment of hair removal is repeated 4 to 6 times, depending on the hair growth cycle and the type of skin / hair.
  • Thanks to the new wavelength and cooling this treatment has no unpleasant side effects.
  • Due to the depth of the laser beam of the medical Yad Nd laser the hair removal is permanent. Especially men with deep hair roots on their back sense the difference with other systems.
